Avon Book is a small bookshop that specialises in used books. Avon Book also has a small collection of new books.

Avon was founded in 1941 to compete with Pocket Books as a publisher of paperbacks. They published a variety of titles including mysteries and westerns with attractive covers. These were popular pulp fiction far removed in audience appeal from the literary Pocket Books.

The Story

In the beginning, Avon was a door-to-door book salesman whose name was David H. McConnell, who employed a well-known gimmick to convince women to listen to his sales pitch for the company's books. He gave his clients a small perfume bottle (named after the Shakespearean town of Stratford-on-avon latest book), in exchange for a couple of minutes of their time, to listen to him talk about his books.

Avon soon made more money than it earned from its books. This allowed the company to expand and improve its facilities, as well as to develop other products such as skincare, makeup, and even the men's scent line. It also enabled Avon to invest in charitable causes like helping women find jobs and fighting domestic violence.

Avon is now the publisher of primarily romance novels, though it will occasionally publish other genres such as fiction. It is an imprint of HarperCollins, which also owns Harlequin. Until the mid-90s, May Avon was owned by the Hearst Corporation, which is now part of Newscorp.

Newscorp's acquisition in 1999 of Hearst Publishing led to the decision to focus exclusively on romance and leave out the other genres. In the 2000s, Avon has specialized in historical romance and has been called "the house that history built." Authors like Lisa Kleypas, Connie Mason, Stephanie Laurens, Julia Quinn and Beverly Jenkins have published their work through the company.

In recent years, Avon has moved into digital publishing. Avon has a digital magazine, AVON Style, and an app that allows users to buy its books on the go. Avon also published digest-sized paperbacks, such as Modern Short Story Monthly and Avon Fantasy Reader, a range which still attracts interest to this day. These were often accompanied with tie-ins with movies. Avon also published non-romance hardcover paperbacks however, these were later transferred by Hearst Corporation to Morrow's other publisher following Hearst bought Avon in the year 1959.

This book is an excellent illustration of the author's ability to create a backstory for Avon. He also emulates the bantering dialogue style that Blake's 7 became famous for. However, unless you're a Blake's 7 fan it's not for you. The story is centered around the relationship between Avon, Vila and their mutual respect and dislike for each other's cowardice and ruthlessness.

Avon's soft side comes out when he has to make the difficult decisions necessary to protect his team. The characters are given a deal of depth and each one has their own unique personality which makes them believable. This is a story you'll want to read more of. The writing is flawless, and the narrative has a genuine sense of place. It's a masterpiece written by an author at her peak.

The Setting

Manko's fair treatment of Avon is laudable. She is awe-inspiring of the former California Perfume Company for breaking away from the traditional role in economics that was imposed on women in the 19th and 20th centuries in America. However, she also shows how its rhetoric sugarcoated what was in fact an economic concept that was radical.

In addition to offering a wide collection of women's fiction Avon also has a distinct line of crime and thrillers, as well as an expanding collection of children's literature. Avon is the publisher of the best-selling CL Taylor and Katerina Diamond, among many other authors.

Avon's mission is to bring the best in commercial fiction to as many people as is possible. Avon books are dynamic and diverse, and feature some of the brightest authors of contemporary literature. Avon also has an impressive history of publishing historical fiction, specifically in the field of historical love. Sometimes called the house that created the historical romance, Avon is still the publisher of choice for writers like Tessa Dare and Lisa Kleypas.

The Author

Avon Books, the division of HarperCollins that publishes romance novels, started as a paperback book publisher in 1941. The company was established by Joseph Meyers and Edna Meyers Williams to create an alternative to Pocket Books. They hired brother and sister writers to form a stable of "Love's Leading Ladies" which included Kathleen Woodiwiss and Rosemary Rogers. The early Avons resembled the existing pocket books and were a matter of litigation by Pocket Books, but they were successful because of their focus on mass market appeal.

In the 1950s, Avon was selling millions of books a year. Avon's vibrant covers and broad appeal allowed them to sell pulp fiction that mainstream publishing houses would have shunned. In fact they were so successful that they were purchased by the Hearst Corporation in 1959.

Hearst Corporation changed Avon's direction by adding more literary works to its line. Avon began releasing digest-format publications in series like Murder Mystery Monthly or Modern Short Story Monthly. Certain of these are extremely sought-after today due to their quality and rarity.

The release in 1972 of Kathleen Woodiwiss' sexually explicit novel, The Flame and the Flower marked a shift in direction for Avon. They would release a variety of additional sexy romance novels including 1974's The Wolf and the Dove and later Rosemary Rogers' Sweet Savage Love. These new releases made the previous purple-prosed love scenes of the earlier Avon romances seem to be a bit tame.

Avon was a pioneer in romance and invented the bodice-ripper. In the 1970s Avon saw a variety of romance titles make and maintain spots on bestseller lists. This trend continued throughout the new millennium, with Avon publishing authors such as Lisa Kleypas, Connie Mason, Stephanie Laurens and others.

Avon has recently added to its lineup with the launch of the brand new Avon Impulse imprint which will publish e-books on an ongoing basis. The imprint has already published A Lady's Wish by Katharine Ash and the full-length historical romantic novel Royal Wedding by Loretta chase, Gaelen foley and Stephanie Laurens.
